XP SP3 can't find new 500GB hard drive(s) Presario SR2030NX

I've been trying to install a new SATA 500GB Western Digital drive in my "video computer."  AMD AThlon 64, 2.41 GHz 1.93GB of RAM. OS may be a problem: Microsoft Windows XP, Media Center Edition, 2002, Service Pack 3, 32bit...

==> Computer sees the new drive at "Setup" when I hit F1, but when it boots can't find the drive using Disk Manager.

Since I had trouble with the new WD drive (WDBH2D5000ENC-NRSN) I removed it and installed an old Seagate IDE drive (ST3500630A Barracuda 500GB) A little weirdness, I receive "hard disk failure is imminent. Please back up your hard disk and have it replaced" when I boot. But the drive is there when I go to F1 "Setup." Then same story as the WD drive, drive invisible to the OS. (Seagate drive was functioning successfully for file by file backup in an external case w/ USB2 for connect -- slated to become my "backup drive" once the WD SATA drive was cloned and running OK. It's in the rack space where the WD was going to sit while being formatted and cloned.)

I'm searching for knowledge -- do I need a sofware patch or a critical update in order to see these larger drives? Properly functioning "C" drive is a Samsung SP2004C, 200GB drive (186.3GB after formatting, C= 177GB, D partition for Compaq system stuff = 8.5GB)
