I have recently purchased an HP Pavilion nodel 500-164 Desktop. It came with Windows 8.0 OS. It also had Norton Product on the disc. I have been using Norton for many years and have several licensed copies. After turning on my new PC, I went to activate Norton. I received a message stating Norton is not compatable with Windows 8.0. I was shocked.... WHy would HP factory install this software if it is not compatable with the OS? I did a bit of research and discovered that Norton will run if I update the OS to 8.1. I have done so and Norton is up and running.
So far so good.... Until.....
I now find that I am having occasional difficulties connecting to the internet. I have localized the problem to my new Desktop. All other PC's in my home connect with no issue. I noticed a message in "HP Support Assistant. I check it out and it asks to have my new Desktop checked to see if HP has tested my Desktop with Win. 8.1, whereas, incompatible drivers could cause issues with connecting to the internet. (hmmmmm.... sounds like my problem)
I run the check only to find HP has NOT certified my Desktop with Win 8.1. Therefore, I may not receive updated drivers that are compatable with my system. (my system has updated a couple of times since I turned it on) In essence, my system over time, could seriously errode and become unusable.
This is incredible. I buy a system with preloaded software that is not compatable and now cannot update to newer versions of the OS without potential serious consequences. Is there plans to certify this combination of Desktop and Win 8.1? Is HP just going to leave this Destop like this?
Can anyone provide some assistance? Or, should I just return this box back to Best Buy and replace it with a Dell or IBM product?
Appreciate any and all thoughts, comments and advise.
BTW, I am an HP retiree, I only use HP products. I am quite surprised HP would put a Desktop out there unsupported.
Please tell me I am misunderstanding something? ;-)
