This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way

"This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way" Is what I get every time I try to install anything since yesterday. I tried to download the software and driver for a printer, HP C5280, old model but it's all I have and can afford right now and this is what I keep getting.  I've  tried numerous forums. On one it was suggested I try 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)' but in trying to install that I get the same message. Another suggested maybe the most recent version of Adobe flash, when I try to install... same message. Tried Print and Scan Doctor, same message. All of these will download but when try to install the message comes up. Did virus and malware scan to no avail. Any suggestions? Very frustrated. Oh!! I'm working on a Windows 7, 64 bit.
