For my wife's birhtday, I purchased a new HP Pavillion 500-281 Desktop PC running Win 7 through Staples in July of 2014. Intermittently the machine freezes up on the boot. Usually it gets to the "Starting Windows" screen and freezes, the windows logo does not come up. When I power down and restart, usually the screen comes up asking if I want to start windows normally or start the startup repair utility. Soemtimes I can choose one of those options and the machine works fine, sometimes I can shoose an option and the machine freezes again. The start up repair utiltiy shows no problem. When I am in Windows I have run virus scans (AVG, McAfee, IO bitsMalware) all come up clean with no problem. The machine is plugged to ethernet (not wireless) has USB connections to: Mouse, keyboard, WD external harddrive, Canon Printer, Logitech webcam. All of these worked fine on her old box. I have checked/updated all of the drivers for these external devices and all are up-to date. I checked the BIOS and Windows login manager is the first boot. It's a 60/40 boot-freeze ratio right now and it is past the 14 day Staples return policy. Any advice????????? My wife is extremely frustrated! (consequently so am I!)
