My church ex-choir director and his wife (was her computer) moved Minnesota and gave me this Compaq tower and monitor/speakers. Told me she cleaned everything of hers off. Well, she didn't. Has her dial-up in area connection and modem. I am low on memory. In Help & Support from Start, Compaq Help and Connections says "cannot connect to server." I have cable internet fast access with Comcast cable. Her modem is Gegere or something and Area Connection is RealTek '97 Family Fast and mine is Arris (modem). Computer specs:
XP Home Edition v. 2002 SP3
Compaq Presario Intel Inside Celeron (R)
CPU 2.53 GHz
248 MB of RAM
CD-Rom drive works but the DVD drive won't open. Connection is so slow it takes 5-10 minutes to open anything. IE8 constantly gets "stops responding." As does Firefox. When trying to close a window or shut-down from Start, Program End box comes up and keeps coming up over and over.
Went to Start-Help & Support-Compaq help and ran tests. For Audio, etc. get: "Exception in DisplayRunMap.runmap.
Only had this computer 2 weeks and have nothing to save. Can reinstall Norton Security Suite from Comcast and my Microsoft Professional 2007 from a cd. Was thinking of doing System Recovery. This OS came with Compaq System Recovery and CD Recovery option and there is F-10 System Recovery upon boot-up. Are they both the same? Do I need to first install Windows XP on a bunch of CD's? Cannot do a DVD if the drive will not open. The button is loose and nothing happens.
I am 63 and on social security disability so cannot afford a new computer nor to hire a tech. Please help!
