When I first got my computer, I did the right thing. I made a recovery disk and backed up the image onto DVDs.
The old disk died and I have a new disk installed. So this eliminates all of those solutions that start with “Click on the Start Button.”
What are the proper steps for booting the computer and installing the image? None of the official HP solutions seem to match what I am seeing on my computer.
I have my Windows 7 Installation Disk in the drive. Previously I went on the blue menu and selected CD/DVD as the boot source.
I get the HP blue menu under all cases. I go down to boot menu and select CD/DVD. Then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor.
I take out the Windows 7 Installation disk and put in the recovery disk.
I select boot from CD and get files loading
Then I make my language selection
The bottom radio button is selected – Restore your computer using a system image you created.
I click next and get – Windows cannot find a system image on this computer … insert the final DVD from a backup set.
I take out the recovery disk and put in the last DVD in the backup (Disk 6) and click Retry
The utility scans and finds the disk – I click next
Format and repartition disks is grayed out. There is a message stating that if I am unable to select an option, installing drivers for the disks you are restoring might solve the problem
I click the Install Drivers button.
I get a dialog box stating Insert the media for the device and click OK to select the driver.
I leave the last image disk in or I put in the Windows CD – it doesn’t matter.
I click OK
I get a listing of the System32 folder.
Now what? What “device” are they talking about? How do I identify the driver to install?
In spite of selecting the CD/DVD in two places (Computer setup and boot menu) I cannot boot off the Windows 7 Installation Disk. I figure if I could install Windows 7 I could then put the image over it.
I don’t care whether I install Windows 7 or reinstall the image.
