Windows activation problem just popped up

Help... I have a Compaq Presario Desktop PC SR5710F from March 2009 that had been working fine.

It has Window Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.

Now out of the blue, in the lower right hand corner , it says Windows Vista (TM) Build 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine

In the Control Panel  -> System panel, at the bottom it has a Windows Activation section.

You must activate today. Activate windows Now.

Product ID: XXXXX-OEM-XXXXXXX-XXXXX and change product key

When we select the "you must activate today" you get another pop up panel.

The Windows Vista home premium product key you typed is invalid for activation

and it gives three choices:

  • Buy a New product key online
  • Type a different product key
  • contact HP company to help resolve this problem (tried that, but system is out of warranty)

Not sure what happened and why.... Can not find the system CD package with any activation key (might not have come with one, honestly do not remember that far back). I do not want to do a full restore from the hard drive and go back to square 1. and do not want to buy another Vista license for a system burp.

Any Suggestions?... Is there a way to contact HP on an out of warranty system to get something like this addressed.
