Upgraded to Windows 8.1 soon after the upgrade was made available with no problems. Machine has been working well ever since using the latest version of "Classic Shell".
Yesterday the machine became unbootable and remains so. I switch the machine on and the screen displays "Preparing Automatic Repair" followed by "Diagnosing machine" and "Attempting Repairs". It finishes by informing me that it could not repair my PC.
Have gone into Advancee options and tried everything apart from the nuclear option "Reset your PC" - I'd prefer to leave my files intact if poss. Refreshing just gives "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made"
I have a 4 DVD set of recovery disks but it will not read them. Have tried adjusting various settings in BIOS but in vain.
Have used the command prompt to run CHKDSK /f but it did not find any problems. Whilst in command mode I checked for a recovery partition and got "volume in drive D is Recovery Image Volume serial number is **** *** (my stars).
Directory of D:/
File not found
I have never touched the recovery partition so I am hoping the "File not found" is not as ominous as it sounds - can anyone advise please.
