Generic question to System restore

$

0

There are several tools installed on a new PC when I get it out of the box. I.e. the recovery manager or other pre-installed tools.

My understanding is as follows:

If I at any point in time I replace the installed harddisk with a completely NEW empty harddisk (no partitions), I should be able to re-install all software, including pre-installed tools and special partitions with the provided DVD's that came with the system.

Is that correct?

What I see is that if I re-install a system this way (OS install AND Driver install DVD), it seems that at the end, some tools are missing. How comes?

Additional question:

I receive with each HP PC several DVD's. In this case I have a "Operating System DVD Windows 8.1 Pro" and a "Driver Recovery DVD, Windows 8.1".

If I would create the recovery DVD's from a running Windows 8.1 system from HP, would I get the exact same DVD content?

I ask this because so far, I was not able to create the recovery DVD's since both systems I got never started (bluescreen and reboot loop). So I was never able to create the recovery DVD's.

Black Thumbnails

After more than an hour of looking at the black thumbnails, HP advised me to do a recovery procedure wiping the

hard drive and reinstalling windows 8.1.  That cured the black thumbnail problem and my computer is working very well.

I did have to spend an hour or two reinstalling all myprograms but I'm satisfied with my machine now.

compaq Presario sr1720 nx goes directly to recovery & mouse & kyboard non-responsive

The compaq Presario sr1720nx does directly to recovery even though I  strike the F6 key or the escape key while the pc is booting up.  Once the recovery screen is on, there are three choices which can not be accessed since neither the keyboard nor the mouse respond.

I may be the culprit of the problem.  I looked on the internet to do a recovery without a disc.  The You tube video stated to use the F6 key at startup to go to the recovery console.  This proved fruitless.  When the compaq boots up, it states to strike the F8 key to initiate the recovery program.  Neither of them worked.

So, being a non tech person, I went to programs>accessories>microsoft tools>reset to an earlier date> and reset the start up to the recovery console.  My goal was to access the recovery console to do a destructive recovery.  This was done to hopefully fix the Compaq, which had not been used for a very long time.

Prior to this action, there was no problem with either the mouse or keyboard.

The end result was the computer boots up  directly to the recovery console providing three choices.  It also provides the choice of hitting the return key to end the recovery or escape to return to the normal windows XP operating system.

Initially, I had attempted to download the recovery discs for the Compaq to return to ground zero.

Hopefully, this may still be my option.  If anyone could be of assistance to a naive individual, he would be very appreciative.  As the saying goes, a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing.

Respectfully yours, Mike

No Games Functioning On New OS

My computer recently melted down due to a virus so I revamped it with a new version of Windows 7 Home Premium on a solid state while putting a 1 TB WD Blue HDD as a second drive to store everything. I was planning to use the computer as a light gaming rig but no games will work on it. I updated all drivers and made sure everything was correct with the new hard drives but I still cannot get games working. I am a Civilization III fanatic so I put in the disk and it installs fine but when I go to play it there is no functioning. The system just acts as if I never told it to play. Nothing. Just goes on doing what it was doing. Also tried download through Steam since it is only $4.99 but even that downloaded but would not play. This also happened with my Steam version of Civilization 5 and Empire Total War. I ran Civ 3 in compatibility mode and all but nothing seems to fix it. The computer recognizes that I click on the game because it has the loading circle next to the mouse pointer but then it stops trying to load the game after like a second. I cannot figure it out and no forums on the internet seem to show other people having the same problem. I wanted to post to Windows website to see if this is the OS being stupid but their site makes you sign up for a ton of crap before posting. HP Support Forum is relatively simple and has helped me out before with my hard drive problems so I figured that maybe someone could help with this.

So I was trying to install a game, upon inspecting the require software and hardware, i noticed I needed 1G of dedicated video RAM but I only have 32MB. I went to the BIOS and I looked for the option to change the dedicated video RAM but I couldn't find it, is there any way I can add/change the dedicated video RAM?

[HP Stream Mini 200-010] All USB ports were disabled accidentally

Hi,

I've just got my HP Stream Mini 200-010. After playing around BIOS, I accidentally disabled all USB ports, cause it's said something like "USB security", a very misleading name. Now my keyboard will not be recognized. And there is no PS/2 port. Luckily I will have a bluetooth mouse, but how can I access BIOS setting without a keyboard? Please help, since this is a serious blockage, I can't do anything with my Stream Mini anymore.

Many thanks,

R

Computer restarts on startup

I just want to say right now that I've went to several different articles and haven't found a solution

Yesterday I logged onto my computer as normal and everything worked fine, as it has been doing for years and years. I logged onto the game I've been playing for 4 years (dragon nest) and it was working fine. When I went to switch characters, the game started flickering. When I pressed play, and it was loading. My computer froe for a good five minutes I finally Ctrl alt deleted and it didn't work. I got frustrated so I just forced shut it down.

This I where the problem started

I went to start it back up and it went to the windows 8 loading screen. But before it could go to the login screen it just restarted. And it just started an endless cycle of restarts. It would go to the windows diagnostic tool and would tell me for restart and it just keeps restarting...

I was able to boot into all 3 safemode with zero problems. I didn't see why I couldn't get into actual windows

This is what i did
Note i had recently installed windows 8 and this is the only problem I've had since.

-i did a system restore to when it was working. Didn't fix it. Though wen I went into safe mode again it said it had restored
-I did system diagnosis ( the thing with attempting repairs that lasts like a decade) didn't fix it
-I tried a refresh, but failed because the windows 8 installation disk wasn't working for some odd reason.

I finally just got really frustrated and tried reinstalling windows 8. I deleted every partition (except HP recovery) and the problem Now is that it can't even go past setup cause the restart problem is still there so I get an error message saying something like "windows failed to enter setup, restart your computer".

I tried just going back to windows 7 so I got a windows 7 disc and installed it. The whole windows 7 screen is screwrd up. The colors are off, you can see pixels. There's no x buttons or minimize buttons
I kept trying switching between the 2 but the problems still remain. I don't know what to do. Is it hardware? I don't have the money to replace expensive hardware.

My last resort is to just bring the whole computer back to factory settings. But I don't have the disc)misplaced it...) But I will have the partition. When I tried f11 it said I needed the disc but I HAVE the partition and I don't know why I can't boot from it...

Right now it doesn't have an OS or anything... Just a failed windows 8 installation that can't continue to setup because it keeps restarting with an error message.

What are my options? Is it hardware? Can somebody help with my recovery partition problem? Any help would be much appreciated!!

How do I turn off the HP Remote Support

Hi.  For this problem, I am using an old xw4100 workstation running Windows XP Serv Pack 3 with AutoCAD 2000 and ran into problems printing to a HP Officejet 7612 printer.  While working through the issues, I was connected to the help center in the Philippines.  Durring the help session I was asked to install a remote access software.  The software opens as a small window titled HP Remote Support.  I was able to come to a solution with the technition and now I am prining from the printer.  The problem is the "HP Remote Support " window loads up automatically.  I cannot shut it down.  I have tried going ot the service panel  and to "Add/or Remove Programs"  I am not seeing software listed to identify as the screen window.  I would like to turn of the window with the HP Remote Support, but I cannot get it to close.

The window comes up each time the computer is started.  Any ideas of how to turn off that application or program?

Sincerely,

Geoff

Consumer IR Devices-code 31- bsod

I am experiencing repeated bsod crashes anywhere from 1-10 mins. from bootup. System is stable in safe mode, Device Manager shows a problem with Consumer IR Devices, unable to load drivers. I located the dump folder for the first crash incident, tried to restore system to a prior date but did not solve problem. I've gone to HP Diagnostic help, but it needs to install files that can't be done in Safe Mode, so I appear to be stuck because Normal Mode is completely unstable. Also noticing during the brief times I can view my desktop, my Norton Anti Virus icon has disappeared, not sure if that is related. Also at times the system boots up to an unreadable shimmering screen. I'm not aware of doing any installs prior to the crashes, thanks in advance for any feedback.

Stream Mini update failure: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

I have a Stream Mini.  I've done essentially nothing with it beyond Windows updates.  So I thought I'd try an HP driver update.  It found that this update was available:

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI  5.7.0.0 Rev.A 15.8 MB Apr 14, 2015

I asked the tool (don't remember its name and it has fled the scene of the crime) to download and install it.  It tried but  failed, saying "there is not enough space on the disk".

I presume that this is refering to the EFI System partition.

Who's fault is that?  I have not put anything there as far as I know.  I didn't pick the size of the EFI partition.

The Win8.1 Disk Management tool says that the EFI System Partition is 150M.  It also says that all of that is free, something I'm sure is wrong.  EFI partitions are just FAT or VFAT, so not understanding it is pretty sad.

I've got almost 6G of free space on c:.

Computer has no option to dissable the Secure Boot

I have tried, and tried, and searched, and searched, but I have found no option to dissable the secure boot on my computer. The only option I have found is in my BIOS, which is to dissable the boot sources. That does nothing though, because the computer still does not boot with the graphics card installed. The BIOS appears to be outdated, with a 2011 version as compared to the 2012 versions i have seen in the walkthroughs, but there is not update for the BIOS avalible. I have also gone into the advanced startup in Windows 8.1 and found nothing pertaining to UEFI. I am frustrated beyond belief, and would apreciate any help out there.
