downloaded sp56288.exe file from HP website
this is listed as a bootable diagnostics file
instructions state that the file is an ISO image file and should be
burned directly to disk
However the file is an EXE file...not certain how to deal with this

This PC had a catastrophic failure and would not get as far as Windows, rather showing error messages. People here were very helpful and after acquiring a Recovery Kit from Comoputer Surgeons I now have it back as when it was purchased, a great satisfaction.
Now what should be much easier. I had months ago done the upgrade to WIN 10 64 bit but I'm stuck with WIN 8 as it was delivered. I see Microsoft wants to charge for the WIN 10 upgrade now.
I had made a recovery disk, actually on an SD drive, but I can't find how to use it. I found a suggestion on line to boot from it, but no luck. I even copied it to a USB drive. When I go into BIOS to "Select Boot Device" I'm offered only "Windows Boot Manager" which does a normal boot, "UEFI: IPv4 Realtek Ethernet Controller" or "UEFI: IPv6 Realtek Ethernet Controller". As I expected, the last two just come up with something like "no disk".
I see no way to boot from either the SD chip or the USB drive.
Thanks for any help.

i need to buy restore disks for a friends desktop so i can install a new hard drive as the orig crashed and i cant get in it to restore it
This computer came with WIn7 and was upgraded to Win10. I would like to make it a dualboot (with Windows as the MBR) with Ubuntu. However, My BIOS is "Legacy" and I already have 4 partitions (the unused space is not usable by Linux). Can this laptop's BIOS be upgraded to UEFI without reinstalling Windows (I want to preserve all my applications and settings in WIndows). If so, can you point me to instructions in detail? If not, recommendations for any alternatives, such as what to do (& how) with the 3 partitions other than WIndows (C: is the main WIndows partition of course; D: is Recovery; I have no idea what the other two partitions are since they do not appear in Explorer and E: is the DVD).
Hi,
I'm having trouble locating driver for PCI Simple Communications controller for Windows XP.
The hardware ID is

Thank you so much.
My old HP Pavilion Elite HPE500f computer crashed where it will no longer go through startup but allows for the Recovery Manager to populate. As i have quite an extensive photography collection as well as documents, I requested a backup via RM of all these items.
After 5 hours of backing the requested files, I tried to restore files to my new Dell computer. I did notice that there were appoximately 250 x.wim files as well as recovery manger software on my backup flashdrive.
However, when I invoke the RM software from the flash drive and begins restoration it immediately states, "Recovery Manager could not restore the file x.win".
Help - I have 20 yrs of photos and documents I need to recovery!!!!!
I have a desktop hpe180t and I am installing sp49904 bios. Half way through the bios install, it calls for patch 253. Where do I need to go for that patch?
Hello,
I have the following problem. My HDD started to die, so I decided to make a clean OS install on a new HDD. I already have Windows 10 installed on the PC, so I've created an installation USB stick as recommended by Windows and installed the OS on a new HDD. The Windows installer made a GPT disk and created a couple of partitions. Then the installation went fine and I get the new OS up and running and then I've found that it can't start without the USB stick in.
The PC can restart without the USB, but if you shut it down, it doesn't boot. BIOS system diagnostics shows that there is no active partition, which is (as far as I understand) a nonsence, because active partitions are relevant for MBR disks, but not for GPT ones. The old disk is formatted as MBR, so I've tried to format the new one as MBR as well, but the Windows Installer changes that to GPT anyway when creating partitions.
When the USB stick is in, it seem to boot from the HDD, because if I force BIOS to load from the stick, the windows install starts instead of normal Windows.
It also boots with the old HDD plugged in, but in this situation it can boot either from the old or from the new one. I don't see any consistent pattern here.
The BIOS is updated to the latest version available on the HP site for my PC (7.15 rev. A).
Bad HDD, replaced the HDD with a new one. Then ordered HP Recovery Media from HP (usb drive). Switched the boot order to boot from the usb drive first. The computer boots up and says "Loading Windows Files" Windows acts like it's loading and then what I assume is the Recovery Media control panel only "kind of loads".
What I mean by kind of is the only thing I am able to view and click on is the red x in the top right corner. It then asks me if I want to exit the recovery media and reboot when I click on the red x. I'm not sure if the usb/recovery media is bad or what.
I've done a DPS self test and it came back with a code 0, which means successful. So I don't think it's anything to do with the HDD.
Any thoughts? Thanks!
Since we are virtually forced to go to Windows 10. why is there no update to the BIOS to account for the changes?
Tried to upgrade my computer from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Failed over 20 times. Most common error message pertained to "Drivers". After Microsoft started charging for Windows 10 I called them to see if it would work if I bought the disk. Microsoft looked up the HP 800-030qe in its data base and said: I would never be able to upgrade my computer to Windows 10 because HP could not or would not supply the necessary Windows 10 drivers to allow the computer to be upgraded.
I would appreciate if a HP representative would confirm this. Am I stuck with 8.1 until I buy a new computer? Thank you.
I can supply a Belarc Advisor evaluation if that would help.

I am running windows 10 pro and none of the windows display power options seem to work with gtx 970. There is no brightness slider and the power plan does not take affect, for example the display is set to never sleep but sleeps after 5 mins and in the advanced settings it still says "Intel(R) Graphics Settings". I have updated the driver through nvidia gefore experience and also through the HP Support Assistant. Even though the intel graphics are disabled at hardware level and through device manager.
The computer starts but the windows 10 apps button doesn't open. I can - at times - right click on the windows button in the task bar and that menu opens. I can't open task manager either.
Hi,
I'm trying to recover my ThinClient to it's orinial state with Win10 on board.
I downloaded the latest HP ThinUpdate tool and it simply doesn't work (have someone from HP tried it?)
When try to create an USB stick it creates two primary partitions and then uploads some boot stuff on the first one and then gives "Error code: 1" and that's it... it doesn't copy anything on the second PRIMARY partition which is of course inaccessible from windows. So I've managed to make it visible using some hacks and copying all stuf from IBR image to that second partition but it doesn't work anyway, ThinClient boots into windows setup tool and then stops saying something like "destitionation could not be found" in a shell window.
Okay I tried another method "ISO Creation" in the same HP ThinUpdate tool... it stucks at "Copying ver ..." and sists in that condition for ever. Doesn't create any files anywhere.
So has this tool ever worked?
Thank a lot.
My mother's Windows 8.1 has become corrupted and we need to fix it. Problem is she has no idea what her product key is. The packaging from the computer is long gone, and it isn't anywhere on her tower. Also, we can't get into her computer because we tried doing a system restore and when it booted back up we got the following error:
"ACSTray.exe - System Error - The program can't start because rtl120.bpl is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
There is no way we can do that because the error message won't let us past that screen.
I looked up info about how to refresh your pc, but you have to have a boot disk. The Microsoft article stated:
"If your PC came with Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, you’ll need the discs or thumb drive that came with your PC. Check the info that came with your PC to see if your PC manufacturer provided these discs or media."
If it helps, I have Windows 8.1 on my PC and I could make a boot disk from mine, but would that work if I have a different product key? Can you use the same product key on 2 computers?
What do we do?
